The Farm12 campus in Puyallup, WA features a unique farm-to-family experience. The 6.25± acre property hosts the Step By Step non-profit organization and their associated social enterprise businesses; the Farm12 restaurant, Fika coffee shop, event venue, and the Loveland Greenhouse. These businesses integrate with Step By Step’s Dreams Work Program and provide financial support for the non-profit. Step By Step’s mission is to “Equip pregnant women, mothers, and families to impact generations positively.” For over 26 years, they have fulfilled this mission by supporting the physical, mental, and social needs of mothers through services and support for pregnancy, parenting and families, education, scholarships, and employment opportunities. The Dreams Work Program focuses on helping mothers gain valuable skills, concepts, and work experience through on-the-job training and workforce experience. The Loveland Greenhouse provides entry-level workforce preparation and vocational training, and 100% of profits go back to Step By Step’s programs and services.
Barghausen was hired as the consultant to redevelop the Farm12 campus. This included renovating several buildings, developing 1-acre of new parking areas, landscaping, a rain garden, a stormwater pond, septic drain fields, and a public water main connection. Through the redevelopment, most of the existing 6 buildings were retained and only a portion of 1 building was demolished. Demolition included removing various materials and structures like asphalt, concrete, paving, brick, gravel, and fencing. The gateway building which is known as the coffee shop, and the commons building, which is known as the Farm12 restaurant, were renovated on the property as part of the redevelopment. The property now includes new asphalt parking, concrete walkways, a gravel turnaround, landscaping, and a stormwater wetland.
Stormwater management involves directing water from parking areas to the wetland for quality control and flow regulation. Due to the site's flat terrain, an Alternative Methods Request (AMR) was necessary for the conveyance system's non-standard pipe slopes. There was a previous bioretention cell that remains on the site.
Barghausen Consulting Engineers, Inc. provided civil engineering, land surveying, landscape architecture, land surveying, and permit expediting services for this project. We prepared boundary and topographic surveys, as-builds surveys, SEPA, land use documents, permitting, civil engineering design plans, grading, storm drainage, utilities, roadway plans, existing conditions plans, demolition, erosion control, and water and sewer modifications.
