Barghausen Doubles 401(k) Match, Offers Retirement Benefits in the Top 5% of Industry Plans
Company News
There are many factors that play a role in planning for retirement, including how well a company matches employee contributions. In a study completed by Vanguard, in 2021 the average 401(k) match in the United States was 4.5%.
When considering employment opportunities, company 401(k) matches add to the overall compensation package for the position. Company contribution matching is free money that can help advance retirement goals. Not all retirement plans are created equal, making it important to understand how employer contributions add up within a job offer.
For example, say you are considering two job offers from potential employers.
Company 1 offers a salary of $100,000 and a 50% match on employee contributions up to 6% of income. Employees at that salary rate would receive a maximum of $3,000 in company contributions per year.
Company 2 offers a salary of $100,000 and a 200% match on employee contributions up to 4% of income, for a total match of 8%. Employees at that salary rate would receive a maximum of $8,000 in company contributions per year.
With their generous retirement match, Company 2 is the better employment offer.
